I saw this article in the free paper the other day... with this girl criticizing what she saw other people wearing in London where she was just in a t-shirt and jeans... I mean, who is she to look down her nose at what other people were wearing?
I quote from the article 'What people don’t understand is that some fashions are meant to be skipped over. Things like backless jackets and high-heeled trainers aren’t actually supposed to be worn. You certainly won’t catch me in garish neons this season'
Actually, the backless jackets sound interesting to me!! This girl is only a library assistant in Hayes.... I don't think people would be quick to judge what others are wearing because those people who are wearing 'car-crash outfits' could be starting a new fashion trend and possibly she could be wearing the same outfits in a couple of months time!
Its only recently after taking a crash course at the London College of Fashion that I have heard about how trends really come about and what really inspires designers with their collections. For those who don't know- there are many companies who go out and photograph people on the streets who they think are wearing interesting clothes or who have put an eye-catching outfit together with a good imagination. There are also many individuals and blogs out there, such as Style scout who posts pictures of random people looking cool. In general, these people are called Coolhunters.
I was approached by a coolhunter last Sunday... and he took a picture of me in this outfit:
Corset: Primark
Shorts: PDI (bought in Singapore)
Shirt: customised from an old night dress
What do people think? Am I part of the 'car crash culture' that the article was on about? I know if I walked around certain places wearing this outfit- I would definitely get looks- but not looks of interest... looks of disgust as this lady who wrote the article would have probably given me too. But luckily enough for me- I was roaming around Brick Lane Market on a Sunday afternoon, so I was probably admiring what other people were wearing too much to even think about whether other people found what I was wearing 'cool'....
